What Does Laughing Gas Do to Me?

One of the most common factors that tends to prevent people from going to the dentist is fear. Thinking solely on the tools that are going to be used can make people uncomfortable and anxious, especially kids.

But you don’t want to hold off on your dental care because of this anxiety.

Sooner or later, you might have a tooth issue that will require a visit to your local dentist. Thankfully, the friendly McAllen family dentists at WhiteWing Dental have the perfect solution – sedation dentistry.

One of the safest tools we use is nitrous oxide, otherwise known as “laughing gas.” This colorless and odorless anesthetic is frequently administered by professionals in order to reduce a patient’s stress and numb out any pain they might endure during a procedure.

How Laughing Gas Works

Laughing gas is perfectly safe to breathe and is usually given to patients of all ages through a small mask that is placed over your nose. Used as a local sedative, it helps to relax patients within a relatively short time, while its effects can be quickly stopped and reversed.

Laughing gas:

  • Is completely safe when administered by our professional dentists.
  • Helps to relax the patient and take away any fear or anxiety they may be feeling.
  • Acts as a pain reliever, reducing the amount of pain the patient is able to feel.
  • Helps to prevent the patient from gagging, allowing the dentist to operate as smoothly as possible.
  • The anesthetic will not put you to sleep and you will still be 100% responsive if the dentist asks you any questions or request.

The effects will go away within a matter of minutes once you are no longer breathing in the nitrous oxide. While it typically takes 3-5 minutes for the effects of the laughing gas to go away, it is wise to wait until you have full control of your senses before walking so as to avoid tripping or falling.

It is worth mentioning that eating a large meal before a procedure can lead to a patient feeling nauseous.

Is Laughing Gas Safe for My Kids?

Parents, rejoice! Laughing gas is absolutely safe for your children. Laughing gas is preferred by dentists to help calm children who are nervous before a procedure. Our McAllen dentists at WhiteWing Dental know exactly how to use this tool to best serve your child.
