September Is National Gum Care Month!

September isn’t just the transition point between summer and fall, it’s also National Gum Care Month!

Gum care is extremely important to your oral health as it plays a critical role in the well-being of your teeth. If you develop diseases within their gums, such as gingivitis, it can lead to unwanted complications over time.

The Importance of National Gum Care Month 

In many ways, our gums serve as the “backbone” of our oral health, and when they become damaged as a result of inadequate care, unwanted issues can arise including gingivitis or periodontitis. These can lead to long-term complications.

Gum disease develops as a result of infected and inflamed tissues. Through poor oral hygiene, plaque and tartar can develop between your gums, which can damage your teeth and lead to weakened gum tissue and tooth loss.

While gingivitis, a mild form of gum disease can be asymptomatic at first, the problem can turn into a much more severe and chronic form known as periodontitis. 

It has been reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that approximately 47.2% of adults in the U.S aged 30 and over suffer from some sort of gum disease and 70.1% of those 65 and older live with chronic periodontal disease. 

Additionally, gum disease not only causes oral health issues, but has also been associated with the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and even pregnancy complications.

With these statistics in mind, National Gum Care Month was established to raise awareness about gum disease and to show how we can fight to prevent it.

Some of the warning signs that you may be developing gum disease include:

  • Swollen red gums
  • Bleeding gums
  • Bad breath and abnormal taste
  • Tender and painful gum lines
  • Pain when chewing
  • Loosened teeth
  • Widening gaps between your teeth

Additionally, some notable factors and lifestyle habits that may put you at greater risk of developing gum-related health issues include but are not limited to:

  • Tobacco consumption (such as chewing and smoking)
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Diabetes
  • Crooked teeth
  • Defective fillings
  • Hormone changes amongst females
  • Recurring stress
  • Heredity

Best Ways to Prevent Gum Disease 

While the idea of gum disease might seem scary and concerning, preventing gum disease can start at home. Take the following tips into consideration to help you prevent gingivitis before it even occurs: 

  • Brush your teeth at least 2-3 times a day with an American Dental Association (ADA) approved fluoride-based toothpaste, preferably following a meal.
  • Floss between your teeth at least once a day in order to get rid of all leftover food debris and eliminate plaque buildup.
  • Use an ADA approved, antibacterial, non-alcoholic mouthwash to rinse out all leftover bacteria and food particles that were left behind.
  • Maintain a healthy and stable diet full of greens, fruits, and vegetables, and limit the amount of sugar you intake. 
  • Avoid tobacco at all costs!
