Five Dental Health Resolutions To Make In 2022

With a new year right around the corner, it’s time to talk about new resolutions. While it’s common to focus on gym memberships and potential promotions, dental health is vital to your overall health but often gets overlooked. This year, make your dental health a top priority in your life. After all, the way we take care of our teeth reflects on the way we look after ourselves in general. Read on to learn the five dental health resolutions that you should add to your 2022 list from your La Feria family dentists.

1. Brush at Least Twice a Day

It’s no secret that bacteria builds up quickly. Whether that’s after a night of sleep or a long day of chewing, breathing, and drinking, the production of bacteria in your mouth is constant.  When too much plaque (dead bacteria) builds up without being cleaned away, tooth enamel is broken down, which can lead to gum disease and tooth decay. There’s also the downside of bad breath, so always be sure to brush twice a day.

2. Make Flossing a Part of Your Routine

Keep in mind that bacteria can accumulate in between each of your teeth, not just on the surface. To get those hard-to-reach places, flossing is the way to go. Incorporating flossing into your regime can also help you form a habit of checking your mouth for gum redness and developing cavities. From traditional thread-floss to handy flossing picks, there are myriad ways to make flossing a part of your cleaning routine.

3. Switch to Fluoride Products

Fluoride is a natural mineral that is known to strengthen enamel and prevent cavities, which is why it is dentist-recommended to make the switch to fluoride toothpaste and mouth rinse.  Using a fluoride mouthwash will also help to wash away excess food particles, which is essential in leveling up your cleaning routine. Don’t forget to look for the American Dental Association (ADA) seal of approval on your dental products before purchase.

4. Reduce Sugar Intake

Eating too much sugar without cleaning afterward can contribute to tooth decay. Acids from the sugar combine with the bacteria already in your mouth to eat away at tooth enamel and start making room for cavities.  Chewing gum can also be a major source of tooth-decaying sugar, so opt for xylitol gum instead. Xylitol works to reduce cavities and plaque-causing bacteria while keeping your breath fresh. Xylitol can be found in gums like Orbit and XyloBurst.  Try reducing your sugar intake and be sure to brush your teeth after eating sweets. If you don’t have your toothbrush with you, drink lots of water.

5. Visit the Dentist Every Six Months

A lot can happen to your teeth in six months, so make it a habit to see the dentist twice a year. Even if everything seems to be running smoothly, confirmation from a certified dentist will provide encouragement to keep up with your cleaning routine.
