Don’t Let a Summer Trip Ruin Your Smile: 6 Sizzling Tips to Keep Track of Your Dental Hygiene While on Vacation

Vacation season is here and it’s time to have some sensational summer fun. Whether it’s spending a few days at the beach or taking a road trip out of state, there’s plenty to look forward to when enjoying a little break.

Of course, while it’s always nice to indulge a little on snacks and other treats during your summer trip, you’ll won’t want to slack off too much on your dental care routine.

The La Feria dentists at WhiteWing Dental would like to encourage you to follow these tips so you can be stress-free on your upcoming summer vacation.

6 Sizzling Summer Tips for Taking Care of Your Teeth

1. A pound of prevention is worth an ounce of cure.

Before going on your trip, it’s best to take the whole family to visit us at WhiteWing Dental to get your summer cleaning out the way and to ensure everything is okay. You don’t want to head out on your vacation only to start dealing with a toothache. Scheduling a checkup will let everything run smoothly.

Plus, you won’t have to worry about scheduling a cleaning later on in the summer when schedules get a little tighter.

2. Organize your “tools” and make sure to pack the essentials.

When packing your luggage, don’t forget to add in your toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, and other items you’ll need to take care of you and your family’s smiles. If, while you’re on the road, you decide to brush your teeth, you can rinse off your toothbrush and place it in a resealable plastic bag to keep it clean and away from contacting other items.

Once you get to your destination, take it out and let it air dry.

3. Don’t be too hard on yourself; it’s okay to fall out of your routine.

We get it. Summer vacations are meant to be a time to relax, unwind, and loosen up a bit on your regular routine. If you happen to forget brushing your teeth before going to sleep, no big deal. Just make sure to try your best to stay on track.

Of course, you won’t want to go an entire day without brushing and flossing.

4. Don’t let those summer treats completely ruin your teeth.

It’s understandable that while you’re on vacation, it can be a bit of struggle to eat healthily. This is especially true if you’re on a road trip and can’t find healthy options. So why not pack a few snacks for your family instead?

Some healthy snacks to pack for your road trip include:

    • String cheese
    • Carrots
    • Grapes
    • Hummus and celery
    • Pistachios
    • Walnuts
    • Strawberries
    • Dark chocolate

Another thing is to slow down a little bit on the soda. While it’s easy to make a quick pit stop and grab some sodas, choose to go with water, or some bubbly water if you have a hankering for a carbonated drink.

5. Enjoy sugarless chewing gum.

Sugarless chewing gum is an excellent option if you just finished a meal on the road but can’t find a resting spot to brush your teeth. Sugarless gum can help to increase your saliva production, which can help to wash away bacteria and bits of leftover food stuck in your teeth.

If your traveling by plane, a pack of sugarless gum can help to relieve the pressure in your ears.

6. Keep WhiteWing Dental on speed dial just in case.

Accidents, unfortunately, do happen. Even when on vacation. Should you or a family member suffer some sort of dental emergency while out of town, you can give WhiteWing Dental a  call and we can let you know if it’s something that needs to be treated right away, or if it can wait until you get home. Regardless, preparation is key in case of an emergency.

After your vacation, try to get back on your regular routine and avoid overindulging on sugary treats if you had your fair share during vacation.
