1. Hydration is key!
It comes as no surprise that the 4th of July is generally a blazing hot day, especially in the Rio Grande Valley. Typically, festivities commence pretty early on in the day and traditionally end once the fireworks have been lit late at night.
For this reason, it is essential for everyone to drink plenty of water throughout the day in order to comfortably enjoy the 4th of July without the fear of a potential heatstroke. However, this isn’t the only reason you’ll want to drink plenty of water.
Proper hydration throughout the day will also help rinse away any leftover food, plaque, and residue leftover from eating. Additionally, water will also help dilute acid you may have drank or eaten that can potentially cause cavities over time.
2. Watch what you eat (and drink).
While Independence Day is a perfect excuse to grill some burgers and ribs, drink sodas, and enjoy plenty of ice cream and other desserts, you will want to consume these foods in moderation as overconsumption can lead to unwanted consequences.
Snacking on foods such as pretzels, chips, and hard candies can cause damage to your teeth, contributing to the development of cavities. Speaking of damage, carbonated and sugary drinks such as sodas and beer can serve as a serious threat due to their high volumes of acid.
If there are any healthier options such as fruits and vegetables you can enjoy, these can help to provide some balance to your diet.
3. Chew sugarless gum when you can’t brush.
Let’s face it, nobody likes to have bad breath or have food stuck in-between their teeth after they eat, especially if you’re attending a gathering.
While your first instinct may be to use your emergency pack of gum, it is worth looking into the finer details of the product as it may actually be chock-full of sugar. Over time, this can end up hurting your oral health instead of helping.
The solution is to invest in ADA-approved sugarless packs of gum, as they can help remove food particles and help with saliva flow, which helps to wash away bits of food that can lead to cavities.
4. DO NOT use your teeth as a bottle opener.
In some cases, for the sake of temporary amusement, some people like to perform party tricks such as opening a bottle with their teeth. This is a big NO-NO!
Using your teeth as a bottle opener (or other type of tool) can potentially lead to a serious dental injury that can definitely ruin the brevity of the day.
